Homemade Yeast Rolls

There's nothing quite like the aroma of freshly baked rolls wafting through your kitchen. These homemade rolls, made from scratch, are a true labor of love.

With the perfect balance of softness, fluffiness, and a hint of sweetness, they make for a delightful addition to any meal. In this blog post, we'll take you through the steps to create these mouthwatering rolls that are sure to become a family favorite.

Ingredients:

Before we dive into the process, let's gather all the ingredients you'll need:

  • 2 cups of warm milk

  • 1 tablespoon of yeast

  • 3 tablespoons of sugar

  • 1 egg

  • 4 1/2 cups of flour

  • 1 teaspoon of salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder

  • 1 half stick of butter (softened)

Instructions:

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

Start by combining the warm milk, sugar, egg and yeast in a bowl. Let this mixture sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This step is crucial as it activates the yeast, allowing the rolls to rise and become fluffy.

Step 2: Mix Dry Ingredients

In a separate large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients.

Step 3: Combine Wet and Dry

Pour the yeast mixture into the well you created in the dry ingredients. Begin to mix everything together until the dough is crumbly. Then mix in the half stick of butter until a soft dough forms.

Step 4: Knead the Dough

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. This step helps to develop the gluten in the dough, which is essential for a good rise and texture. I use my Kitchen Aid with the hook to knead my dough for about 10 minutes.

Step 5: Let It Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size. This may take longer in cooler temperatures.

Step 6: Shape the Rolls

Punch down the risen dough, knead again and then divide it into equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and place them in a greased baking dish, leaving a little space between each roll.

Step 7: Second Rise

Cover the rolls with a kitchen towel and let them rise for an additional 30 minutes. This step allows the rolls to become even softer and more flavorful.

Step 8: Bake to Perfection

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes or until they turn golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 9: Brush with Butter

While the rolls are still warm, brush the tops with melted butter. This adds a delicious finishing touch and a lovely sheen.

Step 10: Enjoy!

Serve these homemade rolls warm with your favorite dishes, whether it's a hearty soup, a holiday feast, or a simple dinner. Watch them disappear from the table in no time!

With a little patience and the right ingredients, you can create these heavenly homemade rolls that are soft, fluffy, and utterly delicious. Whether you're baking them for a special occasion or just because, they are sure to be a hit. So, roll up your sleeves, put on your apron, and get ready to enjoy the satisfaction of making your own irresistible rolls from scratch. Happy baking!
