Why These Ham & Swiss Sliders Work
Ham and swiss sliders are everywhere — and most of them taste exactly the same. The difference in this recipe is in the butter sauce and the technique, and once you've made them this way you won't go back.
King's Hawaiian Rolls — not regular slider buns. The sweetness of King's Hawaiian rolls is the secret ingredient most people don't acknowledge. That sweet-savory combination of the rolls with the salty ham and nutty Swiss cheese is what gives these sliders their addictive quality. A regular dinner roll will work but it won't taste the same. The slight sweetness of the Hawaiian roll against the savory butter sauce and salty ham is the entire flavor balance of this recipe.
A seasoned butter sauce — not just melted butter. Plain melted butter poured over rolls produces bland sliders. This recipe builds a sauce with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder melted into the butter — and that combination soaks into every roll and every layer of ham and cheese as it bakes. You taste the seasoning in every bite, not just on the outside.
Slicing the entire pack of rolls in half at once. Don't separate the rolls before assembling. Keep them connected as one slab, slice the whole pack horizontally in one cut, layer the ham and cheese across the entire bottom slab, then replace the top slab. This gives you perfectly even sliders every time and means the layers stay together when you serve them. Separating each roll individually before assembling leads to uneven layering and sliders that fall apart.
Watching the oven, not the clock. Butter burns faster than most people expect — especially when it's poured over rolls and sitting in a dish. The goal is melted, gooey cheese and golden tops — not caramelized butter. Keep an eye on them from about 15 minutes in and pull them the moment the cheese is melted and the tops are just starting to turn golden.
Serving while hot. These sliders are at their absolute best the moment they come out of the oven — the cheese is melted, the butter sauce is still warm and fragrant, and the rolls have absorbed every bit of flavor. Set a timer and plan to serve immediately. They cool fast and the experience changes significantly once they're room temperature.
Ingredients
2lbs of ham
24 pack of Kings Hawaiian Rolls
2 packages of sliced swiss cheese
1 stick of butter
Seasonings
2 tbsp worchestershire sauce
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tbsp onion powder
Optional
Poppyseed topping
Sesame seed topping
Directions
Slice your ham and cheese into small enough sections to fit inside 24 rolls
Assemble the rolls by slicing the rolls in half and then layering on the ham and cheese until you have the desired number of layers, place in a deep dish, then set to the side.
In a sauce pan, melt the butter and then add in the seasonings to the butter and mix well.
Pour the butter mixture over the rolls, brushing so that the seasoned butter is evenly distributed across the rolls. Add the optional seeds to the top.
Bake at 325 until the cheese melts. Watch the rolls carefully, because the butter will burn them. You are only melting the cheese.
Serve while hot and enjoy!
Ham and Swiss Slider Variations
Honey Mustard Ham & Swiss Sliders Add 2 tablespoons of Dijon mustard and 1 tablespoon of honey to the butter sauce. The mustard adds tang and the honey adds a subtle sweetness that complements the ham beautifully. This version is slightly more complex than the classic and is consistently the first to disappear at parties.
Turkey and Swiss Sliders Swap the ham for thinly sliced deli turkey — everything else stays identical. Turkey and Swiss on Hawaiian rolls with the same garlic butter sauce is just as crowd-pleasing and works beautifully for Thanksgiving leftovers the day after the holiday.
Ham and Cheddar Sliders Swap the Swiss for sharp cheddar for a bolder, more assertive cheese flavor. Cheddar melts beautifully on Hawaiian rolls and the sharpness pairs well with the sweetness of the bread. Add a thin layer of yellow mustard on the bottom rolls before assembling for a classic deli-style flavor.
Breakfast Ham & Swiss Sliders Layer scrambled eggs between the ham and Swiss before assembling. Bake as directed. These work beautifully for brunch gatherings, baby showers, or holiday morning breakfasts — all the flavor of a ham and cheese breakfast sandwich in slider form, feeding a crowd with zero individual cooking required.
Party Slider Bar Set up a slider bar instead of pre-assembling — lay out the rolls, the ham, the Swiss, and various toppings (pickles, mustard, mayo, jalapeños, extra cheese) and let guests build their own. Prepare the butter sauce and brush it over whatever each person assembles. Great for larger parties where you want an interactive food station.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do you bake ham and swiss sliders? Bake at 325°F for 15-20 minutes until the cheese is fully melted and the tops of the rolls are just starting to turn golden. Start checking at 15 minutes — butter burns faster than you expect and these go from perfect to overdone quickly. If you want slightly crispier tops, uncover for the last 3-5 minutes of baking. Every oven is different so trust your eyes over the timer.
Can I make ham and swiss sliders ahead of time? Yes — this is one of the best make-ahead party recipes you can make. Assemble the sliders completely, pour the butter sauce over the top, cover tightly with foil, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking. Pull them out of the refrigerator 15 minutes before baking to take the chill off. Bake as directed — you may need 3-5 extra minutes since they're going in cold.
How many sliders does this recipe make? Using a 24-pack of King's Hawaiian Rolls this recipe makes 24 sliders — enough for a crowd of 8-12 people as an appetizer, or 6-8 people as a main dish. For larger parties, make two pans. The recipe doubles perfectly.
Can I use a different cheese? Absolutely — Swiss is the classic pairing with ham but cheddar, provolone, and pepper jack all work beautifully. Provolone melts slightly smoother than Swiss. Cheddar is bolder and more assertive. Pepper jack adds heat that pairs surprisingly well with the sweet Hawaiian rolls. Use whatever you have or whatever your crowd prefers.
Do I have to use King's Hawaiian Rolls? No — but they do make a noticeable difference. The slight sweetness of King's Hawaiian creates a sweet-savory balance that regular dinner rolls don't have. If you can't find them, any soft, slightly sweet slider bun works. Potato rolls are the best substitute — they're soft, slightly rich, and hold up well to the butter sauce without getting soggy.
Why are my sliders soggy? Two likely causes — too much butter sauce, or the sliders sat too long before serving. Use just enough sauce to coat the tops of the rolls evenly without pooling in the bottom of the dish. Serve immediately after baking while the butter is still absorbed and the rolls haven't had time to steam in the residual heat. If making ahead, don't pour the sauce until right before baking.
Can I add poppy seeds or sesame seeds on top? Yes — sprinkle them over the butter sauce before baking. Poppy seeds are the traditional topping for ham and swiss sliders and add a subtle nuttiness that works well with the other flavors. Sesame seeds add a slightly toasted, nutty flavor. Both are optional — the sliders are completely delicious without them.
What do I serve with ham and swiss sliders? These sliders work as both an appetizer and a main dish. As an appetizer, serve alongside fresh fruit, a simple green salad, or chips and dip. As a main dish, coleslaw, mac and cheese, baked beans, or roasted vegetables round out the meal. For game day, set them out alongside other finger foods — they disappear fast either way.

These were absolutely delicious!
